Why Finishes Matter More Than People Think

Most people focus on the wood. Few think much about the finish.

The finish is what you actually live with.

It’s the surface you touch every day. It’s what takes the scratches, the spills, the heat, the wear. It determines whether a piece ages well or starts to look tired after a few months.

A lot of finishes are designed to look good at first.

They go on thick. They add shine. They create a smooth, sealed surface. In a showroom or a photo, that reads as “finished.” Clean. Complete.

But thick surface finishes come with tradeoffs.

When they scratch, the damage sits on top. When they chip, it’s obvious. And when they wear through, there’s usually no easy way to repair them without stripping everything back and starting over.

That’s why a lot of those pieces don’t age well. They don’t wear in, they wear out.

Oil-based finishes behave differently.

Instead of sitting on top of the wood, they bond into it. They protect the surface while still letting the texture and character come through. When they wear, they tend to do it gradually. Less obvious. More natural.

More importantly, they can be repaired.

If a surface gets scratched or worn, you don’t have to start from scratch. You can address the area and bring it back without redoing the entire piece. That changes how something lives in a home. It’s no longer something you have to protect from use.

It’s something you can use and maintain.

Finishes don’t get much attention, but they determine how a piece holds up over time.

The right finish doesn’t just make something look good.

It makes it last.
